These terms cover your use of Fin & Filter at finandfilter.com, published by Slate Mill Group. Using the site means you accept them. If you do not, please stop using the site.
What this site is
An independent publication about setting up and running a freshwater home aquarium. It is general information for a general audience, written from published manufacturer documentation and arithmetic we set out on how we pick.
It is not professional advice. It is not veterinary advice, and it is not a substitute for a qualified aquatic veterinarian where a fish is genuinely ill rather than stressed by water quality. It is also not electrical, plumbing or structural advice: aquariums combine water, mains electricity and considerable weight, and where a step involves any of those you are responsible for doing it safely and for meeting whatever local codes apply.
Accuracy, and its limits
We take accuracy seriously — every specification here is quoted from a source we link, and where a figure is not published we say so instead of estimating it. But manufacturers revise products and specifications without notice, retailers change what is in a box, and prices move constantly.
So: verify the specification on the manufacturer's own page and the price on the retailer's page before you buy. The content is provided as-is, without warranty of any kind, and we do not warrant that it is complete, current or error-free. If you find an error, tell us — we correct pages and note that they changed.
Your tank is your responsibility
Decisions about your aquarium, your equipment and your livestock are yours. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any loss or damage arising from use of this site — including loss of livestock, equipment failure, water damage, or any indirect or consequential loss. Fishkeeping involves live animals and unavoidable risk, and no website can eliminate that.
Two hazards are worth naming because they are the ones beginners meet first. Aquariums are heavy: a filled 20 gallon tank weighs roughly 225 pounds and needs furniture rated to hold it. And electricity near water requires a drip loop and, ideally, GFCI protection. Where you are not certain, get a professional in.
Affiliate links
This site carries affiliate links, disclosed in full on the affiliate disclosure. When you buy through one we may earn a commission at no additional cost to you.
A purchase you make from a retailer is a contract between you and that retailer, not with us. Their terms, pricing, availability, shipping, returns and warranty govern it entirely. We are not the seller and cannot help with an order, a delivery or a refund — that is a matter for the retailer.
Third-party links
We link out to manufacturer pages, retailer listings and public documentation so you can check our sources. Those sites are not under our control and we are not responsible for their content, accuracy or privacy practices. A link is a citation, not an endorsement of everything on the destination.

You may quote short passages with attribution and a link. You may not republish pages wholesale, or use this content to train a commercial model without permission. Automated crawling by search and AI systems is governed by our robots.txt, which is deliberately permissive — we want to be readable by search assistants.
Acceptable use
Do not use the site unlawfully, do not attempt to disrupt or gain unauthorized access to it, and do not use the contact form to send spam, malware or abuse. The form is rate-limited and submissions that trip its spam checks are discarded.
Changes
We may update these terms; the date at the top changes when we do. Continued use after a change means you accept the revised terms. We may also change, suspend or discontinue any part of the site at any time.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the United States and of the state in which the publisher is established, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules. Nothing here limits any right you have under mandatory consumer-protection law where you live.
