The best aquarium air pumps
This is the one category on the site where the arithmetic is unavailable: makers publish a tank-size range and almost never a comparable output figure. So the buying decision is about matching, and about the two parts nobody includes.

Match the pump to your tank size rather than shopping for a bigger number, because air pumps are sold by tank-size range and almost never carry a comparable published output figure. For a first tank up to about 10 gallons a small single-outlet pump is right; at 20 to 40 gallons, or if you are running two air lines, step up a size and fit an air control valve. Whatever you buy, add airline tubing, an air stone and — without exception — a check valve, because none of them are in the box.
Every other buying guide on this site is built on arithmetic. We take a published rating, divide by 0.7 to allow for real-world losses, and compare that against what the tank needs. This page cannot do that, and it is worth saying so plainly rather than inventing a method.
Why there is no arithmetic on this page
Filters are rated in gallons per hour, and although that figure is optimistic it is at least published and comparable between brands. Air pumps mostly are not. Tetra sells the Whisper line by tank-size range and the listings we could reach state a range and an outlet count and nothing else. Where an output figure does appear elsewhere in the category, it may be in liters per minute, in GPH of air, or as a wattage — three units that cannot be compared with each other.
We are not going to convert between them and present the result as a specification, because the conversions depend on assumptions the manufacturers do not publish. If a page tells you pump A moves precisely 40% more air than pump B, ask where the two figures came from.

What an air pump is actually for
There are three real jobs, and only two of them are common in a beginner tank. Being clear about which one you are buying for changes what you should buy.

All three need a check valve. It is the item most consistently missing from a first air-pump purchase.

Do bubbles oxygenate water? Not the way people think
This is the most common misunderstanding in the category and it is worth correcting, because it changes what you buy and where you point it.
Oxygen enters and carbon dioxide leaves at the water surface, where water meets air. A bubble rising through the tank is in contact with the water for a second or two, which is not long enough to transfer a meaningful amount of gas. What the bubble column genuinely does is push water upwards and break the surface, and that churn is what improves gas exchange.
Two practical consequences follow. First, a filter outflow that ripples the surface is already doing most of this job, so a tank with good flow may need no air stone at all. Second, if you do want more oxygen, aim for surface disturbance rather than more bubbles — raising the filter outflow slightly usually beats adding an air pump.
Warm water also holds less dissolved oxygen than cool water, which is why fish gasping at the surface during a hot spell is a real emergency and why aeration matters most in summer. This is the pick for the tank most readers of this site actually own, and the reason is restraint rather than performance. A single sponge filter in a 5 or 10 gallon tank needs a modest, steady supply of air, and matching a small pump to a small job gives you a quieter room and a fish that is not fighting a current all day.
Tetra's design claims are about noise: a patented dome shape, a suspended motor and sound-dampening chambers intended to reduce turbulence. Whether that makes it quieter than a competitor we cannot tell you, because nobody publishes comparable decibel figures for pumps in this class and we have not measured any.
One outlet is the right number here. Two outlets on a small tank invites you to run more air than a nano tank wants, and splitting an outlet without a gang valve rarely divides evenly anyway.
The honest costs. No airline tubing, no check valve and no air stone in the box on most listings, and all three are needed before it does anything at all — budget for the set rather than the pump. It drives one sponge filter, not two. And it will buzz if you stand it on a hard shelf; a folded towel underneath fixes most of that for nothing.

The step up, and the one to buy if your tank is at the larger end of beginner sizes or if you intend to run two air-driven devices from a single pump.
It is the same Whisper design with the same noise-reduction claims — the dome shape and sound-dampening chambers that Tetra says smooth the air stream. On a 20 gallon tank running one sponge filter this is comfortably more pump than you need, which is fine: an air control valve in the line lets you dial output down, and running a larger pump gently is generally quieter than running a small pump flat out.
That last point is worth stating because it is counter-intuitive and it is the main argument for buying up a size. Pumps get louder as they work harder, so a pump with headroom, throttled back, often sounds better than an exactly-matched one at full effort.
The honest costs. It still has only one outlet, so feeding two sponge filters means adding a gang valve, and without one the split is uneven and the shorter line takes most of the air. No tubing, check valve or air stone included. And on a small tank at full output it is genuinely too much — this is a pump to buy with a control valve, not without one.

Every air-driven setup, without exception
This gets a full entry rather than a footnote because the failure it prevents is genuinely serious and almost nobody buys one on the first trip.
Here is the mechanism. Your pump sits beside or below the tank, connected by a tube that runs up over the rim and down into the water. While the pump runs, air pushes down that tube. When the power cuts — a storm, a tripped breaker, someone unplugging it to vacuum — the pressure stops and the tube becomes a siphon. Water runs back down it and out onto the floor, and it keeps going until the tank level drops below the sponge filter.
A check valve is a small one-way gate fitted into the airline above the water line. It costs very little, takes seconds to fit, and converts that entire scenario into nothing happening.
The honest costs, such as they are. It is directional, and fitted backwards it blocks the air completely — which is a baffling five minutes if you have just set the tank up and the pump seems dead. Check the arrow. It adds a small amount of resistance, so a very weak pump on a deep tank may struggle slightly more with one fitted. Neither of those is a reason to skip it.

Turning one loud stream of air into useful surface movement
An air stone breaks the pump's output into small bubbles. It is worth understanding what that actually achieves, because the popular explanation is wrong in a way that changes how you use it.
Bubbles do not meaningfully oxygenate water by dissolving on their way up — the contact time is far too short. What they do is disturb the surface, and gas exchange between water and air happens at that surface. So the useful work an air stone does is the churn it creates where the water meets the room, which is why a filter outflow that ripples the surface achieves much the same thing without any air at all.
That reframing has a practical payoff: if your tank already has good surface movement from the filter, an air stone is decoration. If the surface is glassy and still, it is genuinely useful. Look at the surface before deciding.
The honest costs. It clogs over months as mineral deposits build in the pores, and the output drops so gradually that you will not notice — treat it as a consumable and replace it rather than wondering why the pump got weak. Fine bubbles are also noisier at the surface than coarse ones, which matters in a bedroom.

The reason to own an air pump at all
Most beginners buy an air pump to add bubbles. The better reason to own one is that it drives a sponge filter, which converts the same air into biological filtration.
The mechanism is simple: rising air inside a lift tube pulls water through the sponge, and the sponge houses the bacteria that process ammonia. You get the surface agitation you were after and a functioning biological filter from the same pump, which makes it comfortably the best use of an air line in a first tank.
It is also the gentlest filtration available, which matters if you keep a betta or shrimp, and it has no cartridge to replace ever — the sponge is rinsed in old tank water and put back. A spare one left running in an established tank becomes a fully cycled filter for the next tank.
The honest costs. No manufacturer publishes a GPH figure for an air-driven sponge filter, so it cannot be checked against a turnover target the way a powered filter can. It has no chemical stage. It sits visibly in the tank with nowhere to hide it, and it needs the pump, tubing and check valve bought separately. The skip entry, and as usual on this site it is not a bad product — it is a good product that beginners buy by mistake, for a reason worth explaining.
The listing is genuinely appealing: a claimed under 30 dB, two outlets, an adjustable control knob, and accessories included. Adjustability in particular is a real virtue on a small tank, and if this were a small pump we would be recommending it.
The problem is scale, and the listing makes it easy to get wrong. The headline reads 10W, up to 600 gallon, while the same listing offers maximum airflow variants of 80, 160 and 255 GPH. So the tank size in the title describes the largest variant, not the one a beginner probably wants, and it is very easy to click through and buy far more pump than a 10 gallon tank has any use for.
A pump built to aerate 600 gallons, throttled down to serve 10, is paying for capacity you will never use and introducing a knob you must get right — and if the knob drifts or the pump is bumped, the correction is dramatic rather than gradual. Match the pump to the tank instead.
If you specifically want adjustability at beginner scale, the better route is a small pump plus an air control valve in the line. That gives you the same fine control for less money, and the failure mode is a valve you can see rather than a dial on a device rated for sixty times your tank.

The parts nobody sells you with the pump
This is the single most useful section on the page, because an air pump on its own does nothing at all. Assume none of the following is in the box.
- Airline tubing. Standard-size flexible tubing. Buy more than the distance suggests; a tight run kinks and a kinked line stops the air.
- A check valve. Non-negotiable. Fitted above the water line, arrow pointing towards the tank, it prevents a power cut siphoning your aquarium onto the carpet.
- An air stone or the sponge filter itself. The pump needs something to push air through.
- An air control valve, if you bought a pump with headroom. A few cents of plastic that turns an oversized pump into a correctly-sized one.
- A gang valve, only if you are splitting one outlet between two devices. Without it, the shorter line takes most of the air.
Making it quieter
Air pumps buzz. It is a vibrating diaphragm inside a plastic case, and no marketing claim makes that silent. Most complaints, though, are not about the pump — they are about what the pump is standing on.
- Stand it on something soft. A hard shelf acts as a soundboard and amplifies the vibration through the furniture. A folded towel or a foam pad is the single most effective fix and costs nothing.
- Hang it rather than resting it, if you can, so nothing rigid is in contact with the case.
- Do not run it flat out. A pump with headroom, throttled with a control valve, is usually quieter than a small one working at maximum.
- Check the air stone. A clogged stone makes the pump work harder against the resistance, and gets louder as it ages.
- Keep it above the water line, or fit the check valve properly. This is a safety point rather than a noise one, but it belongs in the same five-minute setup.
