How many fish in a 5 gallon tank?

One fish. At this size the honest answer is a single betta or a colony of invertebrates, and the reason has more to do with how fast a small volume goes wrong than with how much room the fish needs.

A betta swimming in a small planted aquarium

We have not used any of this gear. Every pick below is chosen from published manufacturer specifications and the arithmetic on how we pick, which you can re-run yourself.

One fish — and realistically that fish is a betta. Five gallons is the smallest volume where a tropical fish can be kept properly, not a comfortable one: OATA's betta care sheet puts the minimum for a single male at 20 liters, which is about 5.3 US gallons, so a five gallon tank is the floor rather than a generous home. The other honest answer is no fish at all — a colony of cherry shrimp or snails is a genuinely good use of this volume. What does not work is a group of anything: nano schooling fish, a pair of guppies, a goldfish, or a betta plus tankmates. At this size the limit is not how much room the fish needs, it is how fast a small volume of water goes wrong.

Our 10 gallon and 20 gallon pages work through combinations, because at those sizes there are combinations. Five gallons is a different question, and pretending otherwise is how these tanks end up holding six neon tetras.

How we judged this, before any recommendation

Three constraints decide stocking at this size, and only the first is the one people think about.

  1. Volume stability, not swimming room. Everything that harms fish in an aquarium is a concentration: ammonia from waste, nitrate accumulating between water changes, temperature tracking the room. A large volume dilutes a mistake into a small number. Five gallons does not. The same overfeed that a 20 gallon tank absorbs is a measurable reading here, and it gets there in hours rather than days.
  2. Water surface per gallon. Gas exchange happens at the surface, so the footprint matters as much as the gallonage. This is why the tall, narrow five gallon tanks that sell best are the hardest version of an already-hard size — a vertical column has less surface for the same volume than a rectangle does.
  3. Behavioral need, which is species-specific and non-negotiable. A schooling fish needs a group; a group needs volume. That is not a rule we invented to be strict, it is why "six nano fish" fails at five gallons even when the arithmetic of their body length appears to fit.

Notice what is absent: the inch-per-gallon rule. We take that apart in detail on the 10 gallon page, and at five gallons it is worse than useless — it would license five inches of fish, which could be read as five one-inch fish, which is five times too many.

What actually works in five gallons

OptionWhat it isHonest verdict
One bettaA single betta, alone, with a heater and gentle flowThe default answer. OATA's minimum for a single male is 20 L (about 5.3 US gal), so this is the floor of the species' range rather than a spacious home. It works, and it is the most reliable five gallon stocking there is.
A shrimp colonyCherry shrimp, no fish at allArguably the better use of the volume. Very low bioload, genuinely interesting to watch, and they breed. Needs a sponge filter so shrimplets are not drawn into an intake.
SnailsA few nerite or mystery snailsLow bioload and useful. Nerites will not breed in freshwater, which is a feature. Mystery snails produce more waste than their size suggests.
A betta plus a cleanup crewOne betta plus a couple of snailsWorkable, and entirely dependent on the individual betta's temperament. Have a plan if it does not work out, because you will need somewhere to move them.
A planted tank with no animalsPlants and hardscape onlyAn underrated option, especially as a first tank while you learn water changes with nothing alive at stake.
A nano school6 ember tetras, chili rasboras or similarNo. This is the most common five gallon mistake. A proper school needs more water than this, and a school of three is not a school — it is three stressed fish.
Guppies, platies or molliesAny livebearer groupNo. They breed relentlessly, and a five gallon tank goes from understocked to overstocked in one month without you buying anything.
A goldfishAny variety, any ageNo. OATA's minimum for one adult is 100 L, about 26 US gallons. The small goldfish in the shop is a juvenile.

Species minimums are OATA's published care-sheet figures, cited at the foot of this page, converted to US gallons. The verdicts are our own judgment applied to those figures and to the volume-stability argument above.

Why a smaller tank is harder, not easier

The assumption that sells five gallon tanks is that less water means less work. The opposite is true, and it is worth being plain about before you buy.

  • Mistakes concentrate. One uneaten pellet in five gallons is a far higher ammonia concentration than the same pellet in twenty. The tank is less forgiving of exactly the errors a beginner is most likely to make.
  • Temperature follows the room. A small volume has less thermal mass, so it cools faster overnight and warms faster in a sunny window. That is why the heater is not optional for a tropical fish here.
  • Water changes are proportionally larger. A 25% change is only a gallon and a quarter, which sounds easy — and a gallon and a quarter of water that is a few degrees off, or not conditioned properly, is a much bigger shock in this volume than in a big one.
  • The cycle is less stable. A smaller filter holds a smaller bacterial colony, and a smaller colony is quicker to be outrun by a change in load. Cycling matters just as much here, and the margin afterwards is thinner.
  • There is nowhere to put a problem. In a 20 gallon tank an aggressive fish can be given space. In five gallons there is no space to give.

None of that makes a five gallon tank a bad choice. It makes it a choice that rewards a single, correct stocking decision and punishes an optimistic one — which is why this page recommends one fish rather than a combination.

A small nano aquarium on a desk

If you have not bought the tank yet

The honest recommendation this site has given at every other size applies here most strongly: buy the biggest tank your space and budget genuinely allow. A 10 gallon tank is not twice as much work as a five; it is less work, because it absorbs the mistakes. The full argument is on what size tank should a first aquarium be, and the two sizes are set against each other on 10 gallon vs 20 gallon.

If five gallons is genuinely the ceiling — a desk, a dorm, a shelf that will not take more weight — then it is a perfectly legitimate tank for a betta or a shrimp colony, and the kit shortlist is on the best nano aquarium kits. A full betta build, gear by gear, is on the best betta tank setup, the wattage question is settled on the best heater for a 5 gallon tank, and the flow question is on the best filter for a 5 gallon tank.

And whatever goes in it, add it slowly and test while you do — the procedure is on how to add fish to a new tank. At this volume there is no such thing as adding everything at once.

Marineland Portrait Glass LED Aquarium Kit, 5 Gallon

Pick 1

Marineland Portrait Glass LED Aquarium Kit, 5 Gallon

Someone set on five gallons who wants the filtration and light already solved

The number
5 gallons, curved glass in a vertical portrait footprint, three-stage filtration built into the rear column, built-in LED.

If the decision is already made, this is the tidy version of it: filtration hidden in a rear column, a light in the lid, nothing clamped to the rim. On a desk or a shelf it looks like a piece of furniture rather than a project.

It is the shape most people picture when they imagine a small tank, and that is both why it sells and why it needs a caveat.

The honest costs. No heater, which the betta that will live in it genuinely needs. No test kit, no substrate, no dechlorinator. The tall portrait footprint gives **less water surface per gallon** than a conventional rectangle, and surface area is where gas exchange happens — which is the opposite of what a small tank wants. Filtration is cartridge-based, so it carries a recurring cost and discards bacteria on a schedule. And five gallons is a small margin for error in every direction.

Koller Products 5 Gallon Aquarium Kit with LED and Power Filter

Pick 2

Koller Products 5 Gallon Aquarium Kit with LED and Power Filter

The cheapest way into a five gallon tank

The number
5 gallons, LED lighting and a power filter included per the listing.

The honest entry point. If the five gallon tank is a trial rather than a commitment — a desk tank, a child's first tank with an adult doing the water changes — paying the least for the box and spending the difference on a heater and a test kit is a rational order of operations.

The honest costs. No heater, test kit, substrate or dechlorinator. Acrylic rather than glass, which scratches far more readily when you clean algae off it, and scratches are permanent. Koller publishes no filter flow figure, so the filtration cannot be checked against our turnover arithmetic before you buy. And the same five gallon margin applies.

Tetra HT Submersible Heater, 50 W

Pick 3

Tetra HT Submersible Heater, 50 W

The single most skipped purchase on a five gallon tank

The number
50 W submersible. OATA's betta care sheet gives a 20 to 28 C range for the species, which an unheated room in winter does not hold.

Almost every five gallon kit ships without a heater, and almost every five gallon tank ends up holding a betta, which is a tropical fish. That gap is the most common unforced error at this size.

A small volume also follows the room faster than a large one does, so the nightly dip in an unheated room is sharper here than in a 20 gallon tank. That is the same volume-stability argument that runs through this whole page, applied to temperature.

The honest costs. It is preset, so you accept the temperature the maker chose rather than dialling your own — the main argument for spending more on an adjustable unit if your room runs cold. No thermometer is included, so the setting is a claim rather than a reading. And a glass heater in a small tank is easy to knock against the glass.

What it does not doIt is preset, so you cannot choose the target temperature — fine in a normal room, wrong in a cold one or for a species that wants a specific number. Tetra's own site does not respond to us, so no accuracy tolerance is printed. No thermometer in the box.

AQUANEAT Bio Sponge Filter (nano, up to 10 gallons)

Pick 4

AQUANEAT Bio Sponge Filter (nano, up to 10 gallons)

A betta or a shrimp colony, where flow is the problem rather than the solution

The number
No published GPH figure: air-driven sponge filters carry none, and output depends on the pump you pair with it.

The filtration problem at five gallons is rarely too little flow. It is too much: a betta has heavy fins and is a poor swimmer in current, and UF/IFAS's betta publication treats flow as a stressor rather than a neutral.

A sponge filter is gentle as its normal state rather than as a dialled-down setting, and it has no intake slot that can trap a shrimplet or a betta's fins.

The honest costs. No pump, airline or check valve in the box, so the real purchase is three or four items and the pump is the noisiest thing in the setup. No mechanical polish, so fine particles stay in suspension. It sits inside the tank in full view, which in a five gallon display tank is a real proportion of the view.

Published specifications for the AQUANEAT Bio Sponge Filter (nano, up to 10 gallons)
Flow ratingNot published. Air-driven sponge filters carry no manufacturer GPH figure; output depends on the air pump you pair with it.
FiltrationMechanical and biological. No chemical stage unless you add one.
Running costNo cartridge. The sponge is rinsed in old tank water and reused.
What it does not doNo air pump, no airline and no check valve in most listings, so budget for all three. No chemical filtration, and there is no hiding it behind the hardscape.

Aqueon QuietFlow Air Pump 10 (2-10 gallon tanks)

Pick 5

Aqueon QuietFlow Air Pump 10 (2-10 gallon tanks)

Driving that sponge filter, and nothing more ambitious

The number
Sold by tank-size range rather than by a published airflow figure.

One sponge filter in a tank of this size is exactly what a pump in this bracket is for, and buying further up the range adds output you cannot use in five gallons of water.

The honest costs. No airline tubing and no check valve included, and the check valve is not optional — without one, a stopped pump siphons tank water down the airline onto the floor. No flow control, so if the bubbling is brisker than the betta likes, the fix is an air control valve bought separately. And the diaphragm is the wearing part; expect to replace the unit rather than service it.

Published specifications for the Aqueon QuietFlow Air Pump 10 (2-10 gallon tanks)
PurposeDrives a sponge filter or an air stone
RatingSold by tank-size range rather than by a flow figure
What it does not doAirline tubing and a check valve are usually sold separately. Without a check valve, a power cut can siphon tank water back down the airline onto the floor.

The manufacturer does not publish a full spec sheet for this item, so nothing beyond the figures above is stated. We have not used this unit.

API Freshwater Master Test Kit

Pick 6

API Freshwater Master Test Kit

The tank size where a mistake shows up fastest

The number
Over 800 tests per kit, covering pH, high-range pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.

This is the purchase that most changes outcomes at this size, and it is the one the kits never include.

Everything that goes wrong in an aquarium is a concentration problem, and concentration is the thing a small volume is worst at buffering. The same uneaten pellet that is a rounding error in a 20 gallon tank is a measurable ammonia reading in five. You cannot see that; you can only test for it.

The honest costs. It does not test hardness, chlorine or alkalinity. It is slower and fiddlier than strips, the nitrate test needs the second bottle shaken hard and then a wait, and the color card is genuinely hard to read between adjacent shades under warm light. Reagents expire, so an old kit deserves suspicion.

Fluval Bug Bites Betta Formula

Pick 7

Fluval Bug Bites Betta Formula

Feeding the one fish that actually belongs in this tank

Food is a stocking decision at five gallons, because overfeeding and overstocking produce the same reading on the same test kit.

A pellet sized for a betta makes the portion visible — a few pellets is an amount you can count, where a pinch of flake is not. That matters more here than in any larger tank.

The honest costs. It is a species-specific food, so it is the wrong buy if the tank ends up holding shrimp or a nano school instead. Pellets expire and lose nutritional value once opened, and a betta-sized tub lasts a long time for one fish — buy the smallest size you can. And no food fixes a tank that is overstocked to begin with.

Various Anubias (potted)

Pick 8

Various Anubias (potted)

Cover, which a single fish in a small tank uses more than you expect

A five gallon tank with nothing in it is a bright box, and a betta in a bright box spends its time at the back. Cover changes the behavior you actually see.

Anubias earns its place because it grows on hardscape rather than in substrate, tolerates the modest light a kit fixture provides, and does not outgrow a small tank in a season the way faster stem plants do.

The honest costs. It is slow — if you want the tank to look planted next week, this is the wrong plant. Its rhizome must stay above the substrate or it rots, which is the single most common way people kill one. And it is prone to algae on the leaves precisely because it grows slowly, so it rewards a disciplined photoperiod.

Published specifications for the Various Anubias (potted)
LightLow light. Listed as a low-light, low-maintenance aquatic plant
VarietyThe current listing ships potted Anubias coffeefolia, a broad-leaved barteri variety
PlantingRhizome tied to wood or rock, never buried
LeafThick and rigid, and tough enough that it is rarely eaten
GrowthVery slow, which is why it stays tidy without trimming
What it does not doThe slow growth cuts both ways: anubias leaves are a favorite surface for spot algae precisely because they sit still for months. In a bright tank you will be wiping leaves. Potted plants arrive in rock wool that should be removed before planting.

Tetra Goldfish Flakes

Not a five gallon tank, and this is the clearest way to say it

The skip entry, and it is here because "how many goldfish in a 5 gallon tank" is one of the most common versions of this page's question. The answer is none.

OATA's goldfish care sheet gives a minimum of 100 liters for a single adult goldfish, plus 50 liters for each additional one. A hundred liters is about 26 US gallons — five times this tank. Goldfish are also heavy waste producers, which is the worst possible match for the smallest volume on the shelf.

This is a perfectly good food for a tank that can house goldfish. Bought for a five gallon tank, it is a purchase that confirms a stocking decision that will not work.

The honest costs of the skip. None as a product. If you have already bought the fish, the answer is not a different food — it is a bigger tank, and our goldfish sizing page works through what that actually means.

Questions people actually ask

Frequently asked questions

+ How many fish can I put in a 5 gallon tank?
One, and realistically that one should be a betta. OATA's care sheet puts the minimum for a single male betta at 20 liters, about 5.3 US gallons, so a five gallon tank is the floor of that range. The alternative worth considering is no fish at all: a cherry shrimp colony suits this volume better than any group of fish does.
+ Can I keep a school of small fish in a 5 gallon tank?
No. Ember tetras and chili rasboras are small enough on paper, but they are schooling species and a proper school needs more water than five gallons provides. Three of them is not a reduced school, it is three stressed fish.
+ How many goldfish can live in a 5 gallon tank?
None. OATA gives a minimum of 100 liters — about 26 US gallons — for a single adult goldfish, plus 50 liters for each additional one. The small goldfish in the shop tank is a juvenile that is going to grow.
+ Can a betta live in a 5 gallon tank?
Yes, and it is the standard answer for this size, with two conditions: a heater, because a betta is tropical and a small volume tracks the room, and gentle flow, because a betta is a poor swimmer in current. Five gallons is the minimum rather than the ideal.
+ Can I keep shrimp in a 5 gallon tank?
Yes, and this is arguably the best use of the volume. A cherry shrimp colony has a very low bioload, breeds readily and is genuinely interesting. Use a sponge filter rather than a powered intake so shrimplets are not drawn in.
+ Does a 5 gallon tank need a filter and a heater?
Both, for a betta. A heater because the species range is roughly 20 to 28 C and a small tank follows the room, and a filter because the nitrogen cycle does not care about tank size. A sponge filter is the usual choice here because the risk is too much flow rather than too little.
+ Is a 5 gallon tank harder to maintain than a bigger one?
Yes, which is the opposite of what most people assume when they buy one. A small volume concentrates every mistake, follows room temperature more closely, and holds a smaller bacterial colony. Less water means less margin, not less work.
+ Can I put two bettas in a 5 gallon tank?
No. Two males will fight, and a five gallon tank gives neither anywhere to retreat to. A divided tank is sometimes suggested, but it halves an already minimum volume into two sub-minimum ones.
