Seachem Prime vs Stability
These are not alternatives. One makes tap water safe; the other grows the bacteria that keep it safe. Buying the wrong one at the wrong moment is a genuine problem.

Prime is a water conditioner: it removes chlorine and chloramine and, Seachem states, detoxifies ammonia, nitrite and nitrate for up to 48 hours. Stability is bottled bacteria that establishes the biological filter. They do different jobs, neither replaces the other, and most keepers own both.
This confusion is common enough to be worth a page of its own. The bottles look similar, they sit beside each other on the shelf, both are Seachem, and both are vaguely understood as "the stuff you add to the water". The consequences of mixing them up are not symmetrical.

The mistake that matters
Confusing them in one direction is harmless. In the other it hurts fish.
The reverse — using Prime when you meant Stability — costs you nothing except the head start. The tank cycles anyway, just at the unassisted four-to-six-week pace instead of two or three.
So if you can only remember one rule: Prime is the one you cannot skip. Every time tap water goes in the tank, it needs conditioning. Stability is optional and helpful.
When you use both together
- Setting up a new tank. Prime to condition the fill water, Stability to start the colony. Both on day one, then Stability daily for a week while you dose ammonia. See fishless cycle step by step.
- Cycling with fish in the tank. Prime dosed for the full tank volume to detoxify ammonia between water changes, Stability to grow the colony faster. This is the situation both products were designed for.
- After adding fish. The colony is briefly undersized for the new load. Stability hedges the gap; Prime covers any ammonia that appears while it catches up.
- After replacing filter media. You have just removed part of your colony. Stability replaces some of it.
- A routine weekly water change on a settled tank. Prime only. Stability is unnecessary here.
What neither of them does
- Neither removes ammonia from the tank. Prime binds it temporarily; Stability supplies bacteria that consume it over time. Only a water change physically removes it. See how to lower ammonia fast.
- Neither replaces a water change. Nothing in a bottle does.
- Neither replaces testing. You still need to know your numbers. See best aquarium test kits.
- Neither cycles a tank instantly. Stability shortens the process; it does not skip it.
- Neither fixes overstocking. If the tank holds more fish than the filter can support, both are treating a symptom.
