Why is my fish tank water cloudy?
Cloudiness is a symptom with three common causes and three different answers. The most common one, in a new tank, resolves by itself if you leave it alone.

Milky white in a tank set up in the last few weeks is a bacterial bloom: harmless, normal, and it clears on its own — do not fight it. Green is algae, and a light problem. Brown or hazy is usually unrinsed substrate or fine debris. None of these tells you anything about whether the water is safe; only a test does.
Cloudy water worries beginners more than almost anything else, largely because it is the only thing about a struggling tank that is actually visible. That is exactly why it is worth being clear that cloudiness and toxicity are unrelated.
Identify it by color

The bacterial bloom, which is the common one
If the tank is new and the water turned milky a few days after setup, this is what you have, and it is a good sign rather than a bad one.
What is happening: heterotrophic bacteria — the ones that consume dissolved organic matter, not the nitrifying ones you are trying to grow — multiply rapidly in the nutrient-rich water of a new tank. They reproduce far faster than nitrifying bacteria and, unlike them, they float freely rather than colonizing surfaces. Enough of them in suspension makes water look milky.
Then they exhaust the available organics, the population crashes, and the water clears. Typically a few days to a couple of weeks.
A bloom in an *established* tank is different and worth attention: it means something has disturbed the balance — overfeeding, a dead fish, a filter that stopped, or media replaced. Test ammonia.
Green water
Green is free-floating algae, and algae need two things: light and nutrients. You control one of them easily.
- Cut the photoperiod to eight hours, on a timer. Longer photoperiods grow algae far more reliably than they grow plants.
- Move the tank out of direct sunlight, or shade that side. Sunlight is a far stronger light source than any aquarium fixture and is the most common cause of persistent green water.
- Reduce nutrients — feed less, do your water changes, and remove decaying plant matter.
- Add fast-growing plants to compete for the same nutrients. Hornwort is the standard answer. See easy live plants for beginners.
- Do not use an algaecide as a first response. It kills the algae all at once, and the resulting mass of dead organic matter can cause an ammonia spike.
Brown or hazy water
Immediately after setup this is almost always substrate dust — gravel or sand that was not rinsed thoroughly enough before it went in. A water change and a day of settling fixes it, and the lesson is for next time: rinse substrate until the water running off it is clear, which takes longer than anyone expects.
Yellow-brown, tea-colored water in a tank with driftwood is tannins leaching out of the wood. It is harmless, many fish prefer it, and it fades over months. If you dislike it, water changes and activated carbon both reduce it.
Persistent haze with visible particles usually means the mechanical filtration is not keeping up: check the filter is actually running, the intake is not blocked, and the media is not so clogged that flow has dropped.

The important part: clarity is not safety
This is the reason the page exists, and it cuts both ways.
Cloudy water is usually harmless. A bacterial bloom in a new tank looks alarming and is not dangerous.
Clear water is not evidence of anything. Ammonia is colorless and odorless at the concentrations that kill fish. A crystal-clear uncycled tank is lethal, and it looks exactly like a healthy one. Every beginner who has lost fish in a beautifully clear aquarium has learned this the hard way.
Preventing it next time
- Rinse substrate thoroughly before it goes in — until the runoff is clear, which is longer than you think.
- Do a fishless cycle. The bloom happens during cycling anyway; better it happens in a tank with nothing in it.
- Feed sparingly. Excess food is the main organic input that feeds blooms.
- Keep the tank out of direct sun and run the light for eight hours on a timer.
- Do not over-clean. Stripping the filter or deep-vacuuming the whole substrate disrupts the colony and can trigger a bloom in an established tank.
