Ten gallons is the most popular first tank in the hobby, and the size where a bundled filter is most likely to be adequate. Here is which kit, and what it still needs.

A 10 gallon kit works as a first tank if the bundled filter is rated at roughly 85 GPH or more, because a 10 gallon community tank needs about 60 GPH of real flow and rated figures are measured with empty media and no lift. Add a liquid test kit and full-size dechlorinator before any fish.
Ten gallons is the most popular first aquarium in the hobby, and it is a reasonable choice. It is small enough to sit on a sturdy desk or side table, cheap enough to be a low-risk experiment, and — importantly — it is the size at which bundled kit filters are most likely to be genuinely adequate rather than nominally adequate.
It is also small enough to punish mistakes. Ten gallons of water dilutes an overfeed far less than twenty does, and the temperature tracks the room more closely. If you have the space, read 10 gallon vs 20 gallon before you commit — the larger tank is the easier tank, which surprises most people.

Every pick above is judged against one number, so it is worth showing where it comes from. A typical community tank wants six to eight turnovers of its volume per hour. Take the low end: 10 gallons times 6 is 60 GPH of real flow.
Rated flow is not real flow. Manufacturers measure with empty media and no head height, and a filter loaded with sponge and ceramic that is lifting water back up into the tank delivers commonly 25 to 40% less. Assume 30%: 60 divided by 0.7 is roughly 85. So a 10 gallon community tank wants a filter rated 85 GPH or higher, and a filter rated at exactly 60 is under-filtering from the day it is plugged in.

The filter sizing is the reason this is the pick. A 10 gallon community tank wants roughly 60 GPH of real flow, which after the throughput correction means shopping for about 85 rated GPH. At 100 rated GPH the included QuietFlow 10 clears that with headroom, so you are not starting behind.
The preset heater is the thing to plan around. Preset means no dial: it targets a fixed temperature. If your room is warm and stable, that is genuinely fine and one fewer thing to set wrong. Upgrading the filter, or replacing a cartridge habit
The number
Rated 378 L/h (100 US gal/h) for 18-76 L (5-20 gallons). Against the 85 rated GPH our arithmetic asks for on a 10 gallon community tank, that clears with room to spare.
If you are going to change one thing about a bundled kit, this is usually the thing. The AquaClear 20 is rated at 100 GPH for tanks of 5 to 20 gallons, draws 6 watts, and ships with a pre-filter sponge, Bio-Foam, BIOMAX and activated carbon.
The reason to prefer it over a cartridge filter is not flow, it is media policy. A cartridge filter asks you to throw away the surface your bacteria live on every few weeks; a media-basket filter asks you to rinse the sponge in old tank water and put it back. That is cheaper forever and much kinder to the cycle.
The adjustable flow control also matters more than it sounds on a small tank: at full output this is a lot of current for a 10 gallon tank with a betta in it, and being able to turn it down is the difference between a usable filter and a stressed fish.

Various Air-driven nano sponge filter
A gentle second filter, or a cycled spare
The most useful ten dollars you can add to a 10 gallon kit. It contributes biological filtration, it is gentle enough that a betta will not be pinned against the glass, and it costs nothing to run because there is no cartridge to replace.
The genuine downside beyond visibility: it needs an air pump, airline and check valve, which are usually not in the box. Price all three before deciding it is the cheap option.
A spare sponge filter left running in an established tank becomes a fully cycled filter you can drop straight into the next tank. That is the closest thing to a cycling shortcut that actually works.

Ten gallons is small enough that concentration changes fast. An overfeed in a 10 gallon tank moves the ammonia reading in a way the same overfeed in a 40 gallon tank would not, and that makes testing more important on a small tank, not less.
Liquid reagents are slower than strips and the color card is hard to read between adjacent shades. They also read ammonia, which the standard six-in-one strips do not.

Not a cycling test
The skip entry, and it is the most important one on the page. Tetra's EasyStrips 6-in-1 tests nitrate, nitrite, water hardness, chlorine, alkalinity and pH. Ammonia is not included — that is Tetra's own parameter list, not our inference.
On a cycled tank these are a perfectly reasonable 60-second check. Bought as the test kit for a new 10 gallon tank, they will let you watch a cycle without ever seeing the compound that is doing the damage.
If you want the speed of strips, buy them in addition to a liquid ammonia test, not instead of one.

What to add to a 10 gallon kit before fish
- A liquid test kit that reads ammonia. Non-negotiable, and no kit includes one.
- A full-size bottle of dechlorinator. The sachet is a sample; you need this weekly, forever.
- Substrate. Gravel or sand, rinsed until the water runs clear before it goes in.
- An adjustable heater, if the kit's is preset and your room runs cold. See best aquarium heaters.
- Optionally a sponge filter, for gentle extra biological capacity at very low cost.
Stocking a 10 gallon tank realistically
Ten gallons is a nano tank, and the honest stocking list is shorter than the shop will suggest. It suits a single betta with tankmates chosen carefully, or a small school of one nano species, or a shrimp colony. It does not suit goldfish, it does not suit a common pleco, and it does not suit “one of each”.
