The best aquarium heaters for a first tank
Wattage is not a function of gallons alone. It is a function of gallons and how far above your coldest room temperature you need to hold, which is why a static chart fails you.

Size a heater from two numbers, not one: your tank volume and your required lift, meaning the gap between your target temperature and your coldest realistic room temperature. Roughly 3 W per gallon covers a 5 degrees F lift, 5 W per gallon covers 10 degrees F, and 7.5 W per gallon covers 15 degrees F. A 20 gallon tank needs about 60 W in a 75 F room and closer to 100 W in a 65 F basement.
Every “watts by gallons” chart on the internet is missing a variable, and it is the variable that decides the answer. A heater is not fighting the tank, it is fighting the room. The same 20 gallon tank needs a different heater in a warm apartment than in a cold basement, and a chart that only knows the gallons cannot tell you which one you are in.
The arithmetic
Work out your lift first: target temperature minus the coldest your room genuinely gets, including overnight in winter. Not the daytime thermostat setting — the actual floor. Then apply the watts-per-gallon factor for that lift.

Small tanks lose heat faster and sit at the top of each band; large tanks retain heat and sit at the bottom. Guidance corroborated across the heater-sizing sources listed at the foot of this page.
Worked example, because a table is easier to misread than a sentence. You keep a 20 gallon community tank at 78 F. Your living room is 75 F during the day but drops to 68 F overnight. Your lift is 78 minus 68, which is 10 degrees F, so you want about 5 W per gallon: 100 W. If that same tank were in a basement that bottoms out at 63 F, the lift is 15 degrees F, the factor rises to about 7.5, and you want 150 W — half again as much heater for the identical tank.

Preset versus adjustable, which matters more than brand
A preset heater has no dial. It targets a fixed temperature chosen by the manufacturer and you cannot move it. Kits frequently include one — Aqueon's 10 gallon kit ships a 50 W preset, for instance.
Preset is not automatically bad. It is one fewer setting to get wrong, and in a room sitting near the preset temperature it works. It becomes a problem in two situations: a cold room, where you cannot ask for more; and a species with a specific requirement, where you cannot ask for less. If either applies, buy adjustable.
Why two heaters is sometimes the right answer
On tanks of about 30 gallons and up, two heaters of half the required wattage are worth considering. If one fails off, the other keeps the tank survivable rather than letting it crash to room temperature. If one fails on — the more dangerous failure — a half-sized heater cooks the tank more slowly and less far, which buys you time to notice.
On a 10 or 20 gallon tank this is usually overkill, and the cheaper insurance is a thermometer you actually look at.
Placement
Put the heater where water moves past it, which usually means near the filter outflow or intake. A heater in a dead corner heats its own little pocket of water, and the thermostat switches off before the far end of the tank has warmed.
