Buying guide

The best aquarium stands

A stand is the only purchase on this site where getting it wrong does not kill fish slowly. It happens all at once, on the floor, with 225 pounds of water.

Fin & Filter earns a commission when you buy through the links on this page. It costs you nothing and it does not decide what we rank. How we’re funded.

A home aquarium sitting on furniture in a living room

We have not used any of this gear. Every pick below is chosen from published manufacturer specifications and the arithmetic on how we pick, which you can re-run yourself.

Size the stand to the tank's FILLED weight and its footprint, not to the gallon number. Aqueon's own chart puts a filled 10 gallon at 111 lb, a 20 gallon at 225, a 29 at 330, a 40 breeder at 458 and a 55 at 625. Buy a stand whose published capacity clears that figure with margin, and whose top is at least as long as the tank.

This is the one purchase on this site where the failure is not gradual. Everything else here fails slowly and quietly — an undersized heater running cold all winter, a filter that cannot keep up, a tank that was never cycled. A stand fails all at once.

The criterion: the number on the box is not the weight

State the criterion first. A 20 gallon tank is not a 20 pound object. Water alone is about 8.3 lb per gallon, and then there is glass, substrate and decor on top of it. The only figures worth using are the manufacturer's filled weights, and Aqueon publishes them for every standard size.

Dimensions and weights are quoted from Aqueon's own standard aquarium sizes and weights chart, cited in Sources. The capacity column is ours: the filled weight rounded up to roughly a 1.3x margin, because Aqueon's chart notes that filled weights vary with substrate and decor.

A filled 20 gallon tank weighs about as much as two adults standing on a patch of furniture the size of a laptop bag. A 55 gallon weighs more than four. Those are the numbers a stand has to carry, every day, for years, without the frame relaxing.

The finding: the tank makers do not publish a capacity

We went looking for the load rating on every stand here and found a pattern we did not expect. The two Aqueon stands — made by the company that publishes the tank weights above, and that tells you in the same document that a suitably designed stand is essential for safety and for the warranty — state no weight capacity at all. The marketplace brands do.

Capacities are quoted from each listing's own published specification. Filled weights are Aqueon's. The margin column is arithmetic on those two figures and nothing else.

That leaves a genuinely awkward choice, and it is worth stating plainly rather than pretending the answer is obvious. The matched-brand stand gives you a fit you can verify and a load you cannot. The marketplace stand gives you a load figure you can read and a footprint the listing does not state. Neither is complete.

How we judged these

  • Filled weight first. Every pick is checked against the manufacturer's filled weight for the tank it is sold for, not against the gallon figure on its name.
  • Published capacity, where one exists. A stated load rating is ranked above a brand assurance. Where no figure is published we say so rather than estimating one.
  • Footprint, measured. The stand top has to be at least as long as the tank. A stand sold as 20 gallon may be sized for the high, not the long — this is the commonest ordering error.
  • Margin, not just clearance. Filled weights vary with substrate and decor, so a rating that only just exceeds the tank is treated as a failure, not a pass.
  • Height that lets you work. 28 inches is the conventional stand height and it is conventional for a reason — you can reach the substrate without a stool and see the tank without crouching.
  • What the listing does not say. Missing dimensions and missing capacities are both flagged on the entry rather than filled in.

The mistake this page exists to prevent

Most first tanks do not go on a stand. They go on a desk, a chest of drawers, a TV unit or a bookshelf that was already in the room, because the tank came in a box and the stand did not. That works at 5 and 10 gallons and stops working somewhere around 20.

  • Flat-pack furniture is rated for distributed load, not point load. A bookshelf that holds 100 lb of books spread across three feet is not the same as one holding 225 lb concentrated on a 30 by 12 inch patch.
  • The tank must be level and fully supported. A rimmed glass tank carries its load on the frame, so the top has to be flat and the whole footprint supported. A top that bows even slightly puts the stress into the glass instead.
  • Particleboard and water are a slow failure. A top that gets damp from spills and condensation swells and loses strength over months, which is why the better stands state a water-resistant board.
  • Check the floor too, above about 55 gallons. 625 lb in one spot is within normal residential loading but it is not nothing, and it is worth thinking about on an upper floor or an old building.
Aqueon Metal Aquarium Stand, 20 Gallon Long / 29 Gallon High

Pick 1

Aqueon Metal Aquarium Stand, 20 Gallon Long / 29 Gallon High

A 20 gallon long or a 29 gallon, from the company that makes the tank

The number
A 20 gallon long is 225 lb filled and a 29 gallon is 330 lb, per Aqueon's own chart. This stand's top is 30 in by 12 in, against tank footprints of 30.25 by 12.5 in. Aqueon publishes no load rating for it.

This is the stand to buy if you want the fit question closed. Aqueon makes both the tank and the stand, publishes the dimensions of each, and sizes them to each other. For a 20 gallon long or a 29 gallon — which share a footprint, so one stand serves both — that removes the single most common ordering mistake on this page.

The shared footprint is also the reason this is the most useful stand here rather than just one of several. Buy it for a 20 long now and it carries a 29 gallon later without a second purchase, which is the cheapest upgrade path in the hobby.

At 28.25 inches it is a conventional stand height, so the tank sits where you can work in it without kneeling and without reaching over your head.

The honest costs. Aqueon publishes no weight capacity for this stand on any source that responds to us, which is a strange gap from the company whose own chart tells you the tank weighs 330 lb filled. You are trusting that a maker would not sell a stand for a tank it cannot hold — a reasonable assumption, and not a number. It is also the most expensive option here, and the 30 by 12 in top is fractionally smaller than the tank's outer dimensions, which is normal for a rimmed glass tank but surprises people with a tape measure.

What it does not doAqueon publishes no weight capacity for this stand on any source that responds to us, so no load figure is printed here — unusual for the company that publishes the tank weights it has to carry. The 30 x 12 in top is marginally smaller than the 30.25 x 12.5 in outer dimensions Aqueon gives for the tanks it is sold for, which is normal for a rimmed glass tank but worth knowing before you measure. No shelf liner, and no leveling-feet specification published.

Aqueon Metal Aquarium Stand, 10 Gallon

Pick 2

Aqueon Metal Aquarium Stand, 10 Gallon

A 10 gallon tank, with a second tank underneath

The number
A 10 gallon Leader is 111 lb filled and measures 20.25 by 10.5 in, per Aqueon's chart. This stand's top is 20 in by 10 in. The bottom shelf is stated to take a 5.5 gallon aquarium.

The bottom shelf is the reason to pick this over a generic rack. A shelf stated to carry a second aquarium is a different claim from a shelf stated to carry storage, and it is the detail that makes this a two-tank stand rather than a one-tank stand with a cupboard.

The reversible black or light brown panels are a small thing that matters more than it sounds, because a stand is furniture that lives in a room for years.

The honest costs. Again no published weight capacity, from the same maker that publishes the 111 lb the tank will weigh. It is also several times the price of a generic 10 gallon stand, which is a lot of money for 111 lb of load — at this size the argument for the matched brand is weaker than it is at 20 or 29 gallons, where the weight actually starts to matter.

What it does not doNo published weight capacity, from the same maker that publishes a 111 lb filled weight for the tank it is built for. The 20 x 10 in top is just under the 20.25 x 10.5 in outer dimensions Aqueon gives for a 10 gallon Leader. It is also the most expensive 10 gallon stand on this page by a wide margin.

MAHANCRIS 20 Gallon Fish Tank Stand with 2-Tier Storage

Pick 3

MAHANCRIS 20 Gallon Fish Tank Stand with 2-Tier Storage

A 20 gallon HIGH, on a budget

The number
The top is 24.0 by 11.8 in. A 20 gallon high is 24.25 by 12.5 in and weighs 225 lb filled. A 20 gallon LONG is 30.25 in, so this stand is six inches too short for one.

Read the dimensions, not the name. This is listed as a 20 gallon stand and it is — for the 20 gallon high. If your tank is a 20 gallon long, the top is six inches shorter than the tank and the stand is simply the wrong product. The two tanks are compared in full on our 20 long versus 20 high page, and this is the most expensive way to learn the difference.

Once that is settled it is a lot of stand for the money, with two tiers of storage below for the bucket, the test kit and the box of food that otherwise live on the floor.

The honest costs. The listing states no weight capacity, which on a stand that has to carry 225 lb is the single figure you most want and the one you cannot get. At 24.4 inches tall it is also noticeably lower than the 28 inch stands here, which puts a tall tank at an awkward viewing height and a short one at a comfortable working one.

ConstructionMetal frame with board top
What it does not doNo weight capacity is stated in the listing, so none is printed here — on a stand that has to carry 225 lb that is the figure you most want. The 24.0 in top means this is a stand for a 20 gallon HIGH; it is six inches short of a 20 gallon long and must not be used for one. At 24.4 in it is also lower than a standard 28 in stand, which changes the viewing height.

Snughome 40 Gallon Fish Tank Stand, 660 lb Capacity

Pick 4

Snughome 40 Gallon Fish Tank Stand, 660 lb Capacity

A 40 gallon tank, or a 20 to 29 with headroom to spare

The number
Stated at 660 lb and stated to hold 20 to 40 gallon tanks. A 40 gallon breeder is 458 lb filled, so the margin is about 1.4x. On a 29 gallon at 330 lb the same stand is carrying half its rating.

After two Aqueon stands with no published load figure, a stand that states one is a genuine step up in what you can check before buying. 660 lb is not an enormous number for a 40 gallon tank, but it is a number, and 1.4x over the filled weight is a sensible working margin.

It is also the most flexible stand on this page in tank terms: anything from a 20 gallon to a 40 gallon sits comfortably inside the rating, so this is the one to buy if the tank you want is not the tank you will have in two years.

The honest costs. The listing states a capacity but no top dimensions, which is the opposite problem to the Aqueon stands — you can check the load and not the fit. Measure your tank's footprint first and be prepared to send it back. A 1.4x margin is adequate rather than generous, and Aqueon's own chart notes that filled weights vary with substrate and decor, both of which push the real number up. Snughome is a marketplace brand with no support history we can point to.

Snughome is a marketplace brand, so expect less support continuity than Aqueon.

METYERRY 55 Gallon Fish Tank Stand, 860 lb Capacity

Pick 5

METYERRY 55 Gallon Fish Tank Stand, 860 lb Capacity

A 55 gallon tank

The number
Stated at 860 lb for a 55 gallon tank. Aqueon gives a 55 gallon as 48.25 by 12.75 by 21 in and 625 lb filled, so the stated margin is about 1.4x.

Fifty-five gallons is where this stops being theoretical. Six hundred and twenty-five pounds is beyond what any ordinary piece of household furniture is built for, and it is concentrated on a footprint four feet long and barely a foot deep. At this size a purpose-built stand is not a preference.

The built-in outlet is genuinely useful here, because a 55 gallon tank runs a filter, a heater, a light and usually an air pump, and the alternative is a power strip on the floor under a body of water.

The honest costs. No top dimensions are published, so again the fit cannot be checked in advance against the 48.25 inch tank. The built-in outlet is convenient and is also one more electrical component living underneath 625 lb of water — keep the drip loops. METYERRY is a marketplace brand, so the 860 lb figure is a listing claim rather than a tested specification, and there is no support history to fall back on.

Keelian 55-75 Gallon Fish Tank Stand, 800 lb Top

Skip this

Keelian 55-75 Gallon Fish Tank Stand, 800 lb Top

A 55 gallon tank only — not the 75 on its own label

This is a skip on arithmetic, not on build quality. The listing states a top capacity of 800 lb and a tank range of 55 to 75 gallons. Aqueon's chart puts a 75 gallon tank at 785 lb filled. The gap between the stated rating and the stated use is fifteen pounds.

Fifteen pounds is less than the substrate. Aqueon's own note on that chart is that filled weights vary depending on substrate and decor, and two inches of sand in a 75 gallon tank is comfortably more than the entire margin. A rock, a piece of driftwood and a full filter put the real load over the stated rating.

At 55 gallons the same stand is carrying 625 lb against a stated 800, which is a 1.28x margin and a reasonable purchase. The problem is specifically the top of the range the listing claims, and the reason this is a skip rather than a footnote is that the label is what people buy on.

The six-leg frame and the power outlets are real features. If you want this stand, buy it for a tank it has margin over, and treat the 75 gallon claim as marketing rather than engineering.

What it does not doThe stated 800 lb top against a 75 gallon tank's 785 lb filled weight is a margin of about 2%, which is not a margin at all — and Aqueon's own note is that filled weights vary with substrate and decor, both of which push the real number up. At 55 gallons (625 lb filled) the same stand has sensible headroom. No top dimensions are published. Keelian is a marketplace brand.

Height, storage and the things you will actually use

Twenty eight inches is the standard, and it is the right call for most people: the water surface ends up around chest height when you are standing, so you can get a hand in without a stool. A shorter stand at 24 inches suits a tall tank, since the top of the water ends up in the same place.

Storage below is worth more than it sounds, because a tank generates a surprising amount of equipment: a bucket, a siphon, a test kit, food, dechlorinator and a spare filter cartridge. Those either live under the tank or they live on the floor. A closed cabinet is better than open shelves for anything with a label that fades.

What goes on and in the stand is the rest of the setup: the best filter for a 20 gallon tank, the heater sized to your room and, at 29 gallons and up, the best heater for a 30 gallon tank. If you have not chosen the tank yet, the shape question comes first: 20 gallon long vs 20 gallon high.

What this costs, and when to buy it

A stand is one of the larger single line items in a first setup, and it is the one most often deferred — which is exactly backwards, because it is the only component that cannot be upgraded after the tank is full. Moving a running aquarium means draining it, and draining it means catching the fish. Buy the stand before the tank, not after. The full cost breakdown for a first setup is on what a first tank really costs.

And once the tank is level and filled, none of this matters for several weeks, because the tank is not ready for fish regardless of what it is standing on. That part is on how to cycle a fish tank.

Questions people actually ask

Frequently asked questions

+ What size stand do I need for a 20 gallon tank?
One rated for at least 300 lb, with a top as long as the tank. Aqueon puts a filled 20 gallon at 225 lb. Check which 20 gallon you have first: the high is 24.25 inches long and the long is 30.25, and a stand sold for one will not fit the other.
+ How much does a filled aquarium weigh?
Per Aqueon's own chart: about 111 lb for a 10 gallon, 225 lb for a 20 gallon in either shape, 330 lb for a 29, 458 lb for a 40 breeder and 625 lb for a 55. Those figures vary upward with substrate and decor.
+ Can I put a fish tank on a regular table or bookshelf?
At 5 or 10 gallons usually yes, if the surface is flat and solid. At 20 gallons and up it is a real risk. Household furniture is rated for distributed load, not for 225 lb concentrated on a footprint the size of a laptop bag, and a rimmed glass tank needs its whole base supported and level.
+ Why do aquarium stands not list a weight capacity?
Some do and some do not, and the pattern is the reverse of what you would expect. Of the six stands on this page, the three that publish a capacity are marketplace brands; the two from Aqueon, which makes the tanks and publishes their filled weights, state no load rating we can find, and neither does one budget stand.
+ Does a 20 gallon long need a different stand from a 20 gallon high?
Yes. They hold the same water and weigh the same filled, but the long is 30.25 inches and the high is 24.25. A stand sized for the high is six inches too short for the long, which is the most common ordering mistake at this size.
+ How tall should an aquarium stand be?
About 28 inches for most tanks, which puts the water surface near chest height when you are standing, so you can reach the substrate without a stool. A shorter stand suits a tall tank, since it brings the water surface back to the same place.
+ Should I buy the stand before the tank?
Yes. It is the only part of the setup you cannot change later without draining the tank and catching the fish, so deferring it tends to mean living with whatever furniture was already in the room.
+ Is a 660 lb stand enough for a 40 gallon tank?
Yes, with a working margin. A 40 gallon breeder is 458 lb filled, so a 660 lb rating is about 1.4x. Treat ratings that only just exceed the filled weight as a failure rather than a pass, because substrate and decor push the real load up.
