Tetra Whisper IQ review

Start here, because this is the model where the Whisper IQ's sizing and the arithmetic genuinely agree. Tetra rates it at 105 GPH for a 10 gallon tank, and our method asks for 85 rated GPH on a 10 gallon community tank. That is a real margin rather than a nominal one, and it is the only model in the line of which that is true.

It is also the least expensive filter on this page, and for a first 10 gallon tank that matters. Tetra states a self-priming submerged motor that starts with no priming required, and a sound shield for quiet filtration under 40 dB — both genuinely useful properties in a bedroom or a living room.

The cartridge is the Medium Stay Clean Bio-Bag, which is a different size from the rest of the line. Worth knowing before you stock up, because the Large packs sold for the bigger models will not fit.

The honest costs. Tetra directs changing the cartridge monthly, which is a recurring purchase for as long as you own it. There is no published flow-control figure, so unlike an adjustable filter you cannot turn it down — which makes it a poor choice for a betta, where 105 GPH on a small tank is a lot of current. No heater, no test kit.

This is the most useful buying advice on the page: if you have a 20 gallon tank and want a Whisper IQ, buy this one rather than the model named for your tank.

The reason is the arithmetic. A fully stocked 20 gallon community tank wants 170 rated GPH by our method, and the IQ 30's 175 GPH clears that. The IQ 20, named for exactly that tank, does not — it is the skip entry below. Sizing up one model is the difference between a filter that meets the load and one that sits a quarter short of it.

The flip side is equally important: this is not a 30 gallon filter in practice. On a stocked 30 gallon tank our method asks for 257 rated GPH, and 175 is about a third short. The model number describes the tank Tetra names it for, not the tank it comfortably filters.

The honest costs. It uses the Large Stay Clean cartridge on the same monthly schedule, so the running cost is the same as every other model above the IQ 10. No published flow control. And a larger filter on a 20 gallon tank moves more water, so anything long-finned may need a baffle on the spillway.

This is the part of the Whisper IQ that the shelf price does not show. The filter is cheap. The cartridges are forever.

Tetra directs changing them monthly, so twelve in a pack is a year's supply, and over the life of a tank the cartridge spend comfortably exceeds the cost of the filter itself. That is the core trade against an open-basket filter, where the equivalent media is rinsed and reused for years.

Tetra also states the Stay Clean formulation helps reduce buildup on aquarium glass, binds small dirt particles to make them easier to filter, and stabilizes pH. The first two are plausible mechanical effects. The pH claim is worth reading carefully: it means the cartridge is doing something chemical to your water beyond filtering it. We cannot verify that effect, and it is a variable a beginner should know they are adding.

The honest costs. Check the label: this is the Stay Clean version, which is not the same product as the older plain Whisper Bio-Bag still sold alongside it. The IQ 10 takes the Medium size, not this. And the recurring cost is the whole reason a lot of long-term keepers eventually move to a filter that does not need one.

Included because it is the filter most Whisper IQ shoppers are weighing it against, and because the two represent opposite answers to the same question: what happens to your media.

The AquaClear uses an open basket of foam, ceramic and carbon that you rinse in old tank water and reuse rather than replace, and Fluval's own CycleGuard guidance directs changing only one media insert at a time. There is no monthly cartridge, so after the higher purchase price the running cost is close to nothing for years.

It also has something the Whisper IQ does not publish: a flow-control range. Fluval states 100 GPH down to 33 GPH, which is why it can be turned down for a betta or a shrimp tank where a fixed-output filter is simply too strong.

The honest costs. It costs more to buy. Setting up the basket asks a small decision the Whisper IQ does not — what goes in it and in what order. And keepers commonly report AquaClears occasionally needing a nudge to restart after a power cut, where Tetra specifically claims a self-priming motor. If a filter that asks nothing of you matters more than running cost, the Whisper IQ is the more honest recommendation.

The skip entry, and as usual on this site it is not a criticism of the build — it is a criticism of reading the model name as a sizing recommendation.

The Whisper IQ 20 is rated at 130 GPH. The model number tells a shopper it is the 20 gallon filter, and a reasonable person with a 20 gallon tank buys it. Our method says a fully stocked 20 gallon community tank needs 170 rated GPH, so this is about 24% short before anything else is accounted for.

There is a version of this purchase that works. On a lightly stocked or planted 20 gallon tank, where a 5x turnover target of 143 rated GPH is the honest figure, it is about 9% short — close enough that a modest fish load is fine. On a busy community tank, it is not.

The fix costs very little more: buy the Whisper IQ 30 instead, which at 175 GPH clears the 170 figure outright. Or keep the IQ 20 and add a sponge filter alongside it, which adds biological capacity and redundancy for a few dollars.

The honest costs beyond sizing are the same as the rest of the line: a Large Stay Clean cartridge every month, and no published flow control.
